Success Stories

Strong Schools, Strong Community. The Troy Foundation has been the spark for learning in so many students. Here are some of our stories:

Language & Literacy Grants:
Picture Dictionaries for English Language Learners

Imagine you are a young child who has left the only home you have known to come to America with your family. You are suddenly in a new school, learning a new language with people who can't understand you. About 10% of students in the Troy School District are learning English as a second language, with all the challenges that entails. The Troy Foundation funded a grant to purchase picture dictionaries to help elementary school students translate from their native languages and master English. The variety of dictionaries needed shows the enormous diversity of Troy students: Albanian, Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese, Farsi, French, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Science, Math & Technology Grants:

Physics of Cell Phones and Wireless Communication

Students learn better when they focus on topics that are relevant to them, and what is more relevant to high school students than a cell phone? Physics of Cell Phones and Wireless Communication is a nationally recognized program developed locally. The curriculum is inquiry-based and hands-on, including topics such as energy transformations, optics, waves, and electricity. The Troy Foundation provided funds to train teachers in this curriculum and to purchase teaching materials.

Citizenship Grants:
Civil War Re-Enactment

The Troy Foundation helped underwrite a Civil War camp at the Troy Historical Museum for students at our four middle schools to experience and learn the history of that period through demonstration, observation, participation, and lectures. Through teachers and re-enactors, the students learned about medicine, camp life, blacksmiths and farriers, uniforms and weapons, leisure activities, and influential people of the time. Our grant funded admission, re-enactors, and instructional supplies.

Chinese Puppet Show (Innovator of the Year Award)
Grant funds were requested to support a project for the 6th and 7th grade Chinese class.  The project was a puppet show requiring students to learn the necessary vocabulary, make a puppet after researching the costume, and develop and memorize the script.  TFEE funds were used to purchase the portable stage, craft materials used to make the puppets and other props necessary for the show.
