Special Program Grants

Special Program Grants 2017-2018

Sui Chu                  Youth Services                Team Building
Through “Team Building” we will provide high-impact learning, increase team and communication skills, and improve morale and productivity. Since this is a game, children will not feel any pressure. It helps building up kids' confidence, spirit of teamwork and cooperation through joyful activity.  The activity is designed to address needs of children who spend too much time alone which causes their social skills to fall behind, who use most of their time with technology at study, homework and playing games and therefore lack skills at the person-to-person interaction and who are unable to get the meaning of other people's facial expressions.

Jenny Hulway        Special Education           Interactive Shared Reading
Parents and caregivers are the agents of change for their children. We will provide knowledge and training to help parents and children develop their best possible language, social, and literacy skills. Since early literacy skills predict literacy success and literacy is a key to academic success it is crucial to establish strong book sharing skills with families. We will encourage reading with children, not TO children. "It is the talk that surrounds the storybook reading that gives it power, helping children to bridge what is in the story and their own lives." (NAEYC & IRA, 1998). Interactive book reading facilitates having an ongoing interaction as well as going deeper into the book which encourages children to contribute their thoughts and ideas throughout the reading.
The bookmarks we print will summarize strategies we teach to families, caregivers, teachers, and other early interventionists, they will be physical reminders of strategies to use as adults use book reading a time for interaction and conversation. We will purchase books that are from Hanen's list 'Making Book Reading a Time for Interaction and Conversation - Developmentally appropriate book list' (Hanen.org, and Hanen's Interactive Book Reading Webinar) will be used to teach interactive book reading at each child's level.
